BODY: RCMP and their city police counter parts joined forces Friday to form a special squad to determine if there are ties between the slayings of Lanie Silva and other unsolved murders of women.
With the arrest of Luc Gregoire this week, "you've got a starting point with a suspect," Calgary RCMP Supt. Don McDermid said.
Gregoire is charged with the first-degree murder of Silva, who was killed this week after being abducted from the Rundlehorn 7- Eleven store where she had worked.
McDermid emphasized Gregoire is no more a suspect in any other homicides than anyone else would be after being charged with a female homicide.
"It's a normal routine investigation," he said."At very best, it's only probable or possible."
The new unit, which will consist of six to eight investigators from both forces, will become operational next week.
