Retired SQ officer sentenced for sex crimes

A former Sûreté du Québec officer has been sentenced in Quebec City to five years in prison for a string of sexual assaults over a 30-year period.
Réal Lajoie served on the provincial police force in several regions in Quebec, including the Charlevoix and Lac St-Jean regions.
He pleaded guilty to a dozen counts of sexual assault, making threats and criminal harrassment.

Some charges were dropped after he announced he would be pleading guilty.
Lajoie, who served as an SQ officer for 30 years before his retirement in 2001, faced a total of 19 separate charges for crimes that allegedly took place from 1973 to 2004.
Nine alleged victims have come forward.
Ten of the charges were of a sexual nature, ranging from inappropriate gestures to one charge of rape involving a girl under the age of five. He was also charged with uttering threats to assault and obstruction of justice.
Crown and defence lawyers agreed on the five-year sentence, plus the seven months Lajoie has already been incarcerated.
