Gazette series on online porn honoured

Reporter Allison Hanes has won an award for a series of in-depth reports in The Gazette on the issue of online child pornography.
Beyond Borders, a Winnipeg-based national child advocacy group, recognized Hanes for articles that looked at several cases of child pornography in Quebec and shone a spotlight on the offenders, the young victims and the officers trying to save them.
Hanes's reports appeared in The Gazette last March. She left the paper that month to join the National Post.
"The articles depicted the real and lasting consequences of children who are sexually abused and how the Internet erases borders, allowing child abuse images to be shared the world over," the organization said in announcing the award.
"Her pieces stood out from the rest," added Norman Boudreau, vice-president of Beyond Borders. "It was beyond the sensationalism and brought information to the reader."
Awards were also presented to Winnipeg Free Press reporter Mike McIntyre for coverage of the abduction of two children by convicted child sex offender Peter Whitmore, and to Diego Briceno-Orduz for a documentary about child sex tourism that aired on the CBC television program The Passionate Eye.
